Savannah Cement to build second milling plant in Kenya

Kenyan cement manufacturer Savannah Cement has confirmed plans to invest more than US$198.3mn in the installation of its second milling plant near Kitengela town in Kajiado County to meet the growing demand in the East African nation

The high efficiency milling plant would feature the advanced Roller Press Technology, which allows for eco-friendly, dust and related emissions free cement production.

Savannah Cement managing director Ronald Ndegwa said that the plans are also at an advanced stage for the ground breaking of a clinker manufacturing plant in 2015.

“Once the two plants are installed, Savannah Cement will be taking pole position as a truly integrated and most eco-friendly cement manufacturer,” Ndegwa added. The firm would also be expanding its product range to meet customers’ demands.

The installation of the second milling plant and the clinker production factory was part of the firm’s strategy to operate a fully integrated cement manufacturing business, the company had announced earlier.

In Kenya, Savannah Cement is the key producer of the uniquely formulated 32.5R and 42.4R Rapid strength development cements formulated to meet all building needs.

The firm has also revealed that it is set to secure a commercial production approval for its latest innovation — Hydraulic Road Binder (HRB) product.

The HRB cement blend product is used in road construction works to stabilise road surfaces and has been developed in response to a request by the Kenyan Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure. With this Savannah Cement would become the first sub-Saharan Africa cement manufacturer to manufacture such a specialised product.

Savannah Cement has invested heavily in the development of Kenya’s most advanced and eco-friendly cement manufacturing plants in sub-Sahara Africa with a 1.5mn tonnes annual production capacity.
