Kenya’s NHC plans housing project

Kenyas National Housing Corporation (NHC) has announced plans to roll-out a 10,000 housing unit project throughout the country

The National Housing Corporation CEO Wachira Njuguna revealed that the houses will be up for sale from July this year.

Wachira said, “It’s very important that all Kenyans get their deposits in place so that they can be able to buy a house this year.

The CEO added that the housing project was in line with the government’s plan to create affordable and decent housing in the country. He also pointed out that the houses will be 20 per cent cheaper than the current market prices.

The project will include one to four bedroom units and people will be expected to pay a 20 per cent deposit to get a house and cover the rest of the amount over a period of 18 years.

Wachira said that the corporation was ready to partner with willing land owners to develop and sell their land to customers.

The NHC recently held a conference for contractors willing to bid for tenders to build the houses. The contractors will build the houses in a design-finance-build-and-operate transfer which will also see them taking care of garbage management and security of the houses.

Construction of the first units is expected to begin in August 2013 and to be completed in a year’s time.
