Low-cost airline fastjet said it had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with flag carrier Mozambique Airlines SA, which includes various operational agreements
The MoU includes code-share and interline agreements between the two carriers.
"This approach to commercial cooperation is the first of its kind on the African continent. This MoU provides a strong foundation for us to meet the Government of Mozambique's Whole of State Aviation objectives," said fastjet Chief Executive Nico Bezuidenhout.
The announcement comes months after 23 African countries signed the Single African Air Transport Market, a regulatory framework aimed at improving connectivity in the continent.
The African civil aviation market, which remains hampered by cumbersome rules and poor infrastructure, forces intra-continent travellers to take circuitous routes through Europe and the Middle East. Mozambique is not part of the agreement.
