Bindura Nickel Corporation (BNC) has said it will increase its production of nickel to 7,000 tonnes after restarting operations at its Trojan Mine in Zimbabwe
According to a source from Mwana Africa Holdings, BNC has said it will restart nickel production at the Trojan Mine within 24 months, after production was stopped in 2008 for maintenance. Mwana Africa acquired a controlling interest in BNC from Anglo American Corporation in 2003.
Kalaa Mpinga, chief executive of Mwana Africa, said, “The restart plan of Trojan Mine involves the production of 7,000 tonnes of nickel to be sold to Glencore. Production ramp-up will be very quick and the operation should reach steady production within 24 months.”
Repairs have covered the main rock shaft bunton sets, main rock shaft ore, bin and waste conveyors, crushing plant steel structures, electrical panels and electric cables, overhauling crushers, conveyors and screens and hot commissioning of a crushing circuit.
Work on the main steel structures in the milling section has still to be completed with more funding required to take Trojan to the stage where it would become cash-generative. The directors have not disclosed the amount of additional funding needed.
Mwana Africa chairman Oliver Baring said, “The BNC board of directors has decided the most viable way to restart BNC’s operations is in stages, starting with the resumption of concentrate production from the Trojan and processing facility.”
