Environmental management improvement for Zambia

The Governments of Denmark and Finland have provided 4.8 million euros for the improvement of environmental management in Zambia

These two cooperating partners have formulated the “Support to Civil Society Organisations in Environmental Management in Zambia” project whose overall objective is to contribute to the sustainable development of Zambia through strengthening of civil society organizations to participate in the promotion of environment and natural resources sustainability and good practices, and in combating environmental damage.

The project has two components namely the establishment and management of a CSO Environmental Fund and the design, establishment and operating of the CSO Environmental Centre which is expected to run as an independent knowledge management and capacity development centre, targeting CSOs involved in environmental management.

PMTC Zambia will spearheard the project which would enable civil society organizations, active in environment management in Zambia, access funds for implementing activities aimed at promoting environmental and natural resources’ sustainability and good environmental practices.

Environmental policies

“CSOs can complement the Government’s efforts in environmental management, as well as advocate for the development effective environmental policies and legislation, and their implementation to ensure environmental equity,” a joint press statement from the two embassies says.

Other areas seeking CSO involvement are in environmental education and awareness raising, community-based forest management, wildlife and habitat conservation, urban and peri-urban environment and natural resources management, climate change, and other emerging environmental issues.
