Acwa-led consortium to develop 50MW solar thermal project in South Africa

A consortium led by Acwa Power has won a EUR 300 million (US$375.8 million) bid to build a 50MW concentrated solar power (CSP) plant in South Africa’s Northern Cape Province

Located in the Kalahari Desert, close to the city of Upington, the Bokpoort CSP plant will use parabolic trough technology and a molten salt energy storage system.

Acwa was joined by a host of industry names, including Acciona, in the consortium.

In a statement, Acciona said, “The sheer size of the project comes as a challenge to the EPC consortium made up of three Spanish companies, Acciona, Sener and TSK, and South Africa’s Crowie.

“The international CSP and electric power plant experience of three partners in the EPC construction consortium stands as a guarantee of the success of the project.”

Construction on the facility has been estimated to take 30 months and will begin after Acwa, who will provide the project finance for the consortium, has received approval and a commitment to purchase energy at an established tariff for a 20-year period from the South African government.
