Kenya road expansion project to start in October

Expansion work to convert Kenyas Kisumu-Kakamega-Kitale into a dual carriageway has been scheduled to start in October 2012

The country's planning minister, Wycliffe Oparanya, said tenders for the project have already been awarded to three contractors. He added that the government and the World Bank were financing the project.

Oparanya said the expansion of the road was critical for the economic growth of Kakamega county and that it was the best way to ease out traffic flow on the busy road.

He added, “The road will link the city of Kisumu to the western region and allow residents to engage in meaningful horticultural farming ventures and utilise the Kisumu international airport for business.”

The road dissects Kakamega and Bungoma counties crossing the great northern road in Webuye.

Of the three contractors, one will build the road between Kisumu and Kakamega, the second will build the stretch between Kakamega and Webuye, while the third contractor will deal with the final section between Webuye and Kitale.
