Siemens to power Mozambique port

German company Siemens has won a contract worth more than US$150mn to install an electricity supply system for a deep-water port at Nacala-a-Velha in northern Mozambique

The contract was awarded by the Nacala Integrated Logistics Corridor (CLIN) and will include the installing of a high voltage substation and several transformers.

As part of the project, Siemens will provide medium and low voltage transformers and centres to control the adjustable motors that drive conveyor belts.

The turn-key project will include construction of the main high voltage sub-station and supplying and installing two Siemens 40MVA transformers and one 10MVA transformer.

Brazilian mining giant Vale currently owns eighty per cent of the shares in CLIN, with the rest being held by Mozambique’s port and rail company CFM.

Siemens will also provide signalling along a logistics corridor being developed to transport coal from Vale’s mine in the Tete along a 912km long railway route to the port at Nacala.
