Siemens has won the digital solutions of the year award for its microgrid project in South Africa during the Africa Utility Week Industry Awards in Cape Town on 16 May 2018

Commenting about the role of microgrids in the future of energy management, Siemens said that the traditional power grid provides reliable power most of the time. However, when natural disasters or security breaches threaten the grid, the ensuring blackouts can be catastrophic and costly.

This is for this reason that organisations and utilities are working together to build resilient, flexible power systems called microgrids. Operating either as part of traditional grid or independently, mircogrids are revolutionising the way the companies manage energy resources.

A microgrid is a scaled-down version of the centralised power system. It can generate, distribute and control power in a campus setting or small community. Microgrids aim to provide a more reliable, flexible, secure and cost-effective source of power.

Siemens aims to provide a comprehensive portfolio of products, solutions and services to help build and operate microgrids of any size. The company also focuses on providing generation and distribution of electrical energy as well as monitoring and controlling of microgrids.
