China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) has signed a contract to upgrade number one to seven berth in Dar es Salaam in Tanzania

On 10 June, CHEC and the Tanzanian Port Authority held a ceremony for the signing of the main contract for the upgrading of the berths No. 1-7 in the port of Dar es Salaam. Tanzania Minister of Transport Makame Mbarawa, Director of the Port Authority Deusdedit Kakoko attended the signing ceremony.

The project is financed by the World Bank for a period of 36 months. The contract includes the creation of a new 30,000-ton ro-ro berth to upgrade the existing berths 1-7 of the port to enhance the overall capacity and service level of the port to enhance the port of Dar es Salaam as an important port in the East African region overall competitiveness.

It is a significant step forward for the Chinese Harbour Engineering Company as it takes on the first World Bank project in the last decade. The signing of the contract enhances the level of operations of Chinese companies in East Africa.

The Dar es Salaam Port provides a gateway for 90 per cent of Tanzanian trade and is also the access route to six landlocked countries including Malawi, Zambia, Burundi, Rwanda, and Uganda, and Eastern DRC.
